Yoma, Chapter 5, Mishnah 4. In the previous mishnah we learned how the Kohen Gadol performed the first sprinkling of the bull's blood in the Holy of Holies. In our mishnah we will deal with the sprinkling of the goat's blood in the Holy of Holies, and afterward with the remaining sprinklings of the bull's blood and the goat's blood.
The sprinkling of the goat's blood in the Holy of Holies:
After he finished sprinkling the bull's blood in the Holy of Holies, they brought before him the goat whose blood was to be sprinkled. "Shechato v'kibel bamizrak es damo" - he slaughters the goat and receives its blood into the mizrak, the vessel. "Nichnas l'makom shenichnas, v'amad b'makom she'amad, v'hizah mimenu" - he enters the Holy of Holies once again, stands in the very same place where he had stood earlier, and sprinkles from the blood in exactly the same manner as he did with the bull.
"Achas l'maalah v'sheva l'matah, v'lo hayah miskaven l'hazos lo l'maalah v'lo l'matah ela k'matzlif" - he does not sprinkle directly onto the cover of the Ark, nor below it, but rather in the manner of one who whips, and in this way one sprinkling goes upward and seven downward, and they fall onto the floor in front of the cover of the Ark.
"V'chach hayah moneh: achas, achas v'achas, achas ushtayim" - and so on, exactly the way he counted with the bull's blood. "Yatza v'hinicho al hakan hasheni shehayah baheichal" - he leaves the Holy of Holies and places the goat's blood on the second stand that is in the Sanctuary; and now two stands are standing there with the two bloods upon them.
The opinion of Rabbi Yehudah:
Rabbi Yehudah disagrees and says: "Lo hayah sham ela kan echad bilvad" - there was only a single stand there. According to his view, since there was only one stand, the mishnah continues: "Notel dam hapar umaniach dam hasa'ir" - he takes the bull's blood, which he had placed there earlier, off the stand, and puts the goat's blood there in its place. And once he is holding the bull's blood in his hand, he proceeds with the sprinklings of the bull's blood.
The sprinklings on the Paroches:
"V'hizah mimenu al haparoches shekeneged ha'aron mibachutz" - he sprinkles from the blood toward the Paroches, the curtain that is opposite the Ark, from outside the Ark. The Ark stands behind the Paroches, and he sprinkles in front of the Paroches. "Achas l'maalah v'sheva l'matah" - in the same manner that he did inside. "V'lo hayah miskaven l'hazos lo l'maalah v'lo l'matah ela k'matzlif" - here too he does not intend to sprinkle the blood onto the Paroches itself, but rather in front of it, so that a line is formed on the floor of one and seven, eight sprinklings in all.
"V'chach hayah moneh: achas, achas v'achas, achas ushtayim, achas v'shalosh" - and so on, in the same manner that he counted the sprinklings of the bull.
When he finishes the sprinklings of the bull's blood before the Paroches, he takes the goat's blood and puts down the bull's blood, and he sprinkles from the goat's blood as well toward the Paroches - and here too not onto the Paroches itself but in front of it - opposite the Ark from the outside, one upward and seven downward and so on, with the same order of counting.
Mixing the bloods:
Once he has completed all of these sprinklings, both from the bull and from the goat, inside the Holy of Holies and opposite the Ark outside the Paroches, he pours the bull's blood into the goat's blood in order to mix them. Now we have one full mizrak containing both bloods together, and he takes what is in the full mizrak and pours it back into the empty mizrak, and this is in order to mix them thoroughly with one another.
In summary: In this mishnah we learned the sprinkling of the goat's blood in the Holy of Holies - the slaughter, receiving the blood in the mizrak, entering and standing in the same place, sprinkling one upward and seven downward "k'matzlif" with the same order of counting; the placing of the blood on the second stand in the Sanctuary, and the opinion of Rabbi Yehudah that there was only one stand there; the sprinklings toward the Paroches opposite the Ark from the outside, from the bull's blood and from the goat's blood, and finally the mixing of the two bloods by pouring the bull's blood into the goat's blood and pouring the full one back into the empty one.
In the next mishnah we will see how he continues with the sprinkling of the blood on the incense altar, doing so with the two bloods that have been mixed together.
