Taanis, Chapter Two, Mishnah 3. At the end of the previous mishnah we learned that on the last seven fasts they added prayers, and to the eighteen berachos of the regular Shemoneh Esrei they added another six berachos. Our mishnah comes to specify what those six berachos are.
"V'eilu hen" - these are the six additional berachos:
"Zichronos" - the same verses that we say in the berachah of Zichronos on Rosh Hashanah.
"U'shofaros" - the same verses that we say in the berachah of Shofaros on Rosh Hashanah. These two berachos are the first of the six.
"El Hashem batzarasah li karasi vaya'aneini" - to Hashem, in the distress that I have, I call, and He answers me. This verse is in Tehillim, chapter 125.
"Esa einai el heharim" - Shir HaMaalos, chapter 121.
"Mimaamakim kerasicha Hashem" - from the depths I call to Hashem. Chapter 130.
"Tefillah l'ani ki yaatof" - chapter 102, and this is the sixth of the berachos.
Our mishnah deals with the verses themselves, just as it did with Zichronos and Shofaros, while the next mishnah will teach us what the conclusion is, that is, the berachah that closes each one of them.
The approach of Rabbi Yehudah:
Rabbi Yehudah says: "Lo hayah tzarich lomar zichronos v'shofaros" - one does not say the verses of Zichronos and Shofaros that we say on Rosh Hashanah, "ela omer tachtan" - in their place one says two other passages:
"Ra'av ki yihyeh, dever ki yihyeh" - verses in Sefer Melachim, chapter 8 from verse 37 onward, which come in place of the verses of Zichronos.
"Asher hayah devar Hashem el Yirmiyahu al divrei habatzaros" - the word of Hashem that came to Yirmiyahu the prophet concerning the drought, in Yirmiyahu chapter 4, and these come in place of the verses of Shofaros.
"V'omer chosmeihen" - even according to Rabbi Yehudah, the concluding berachos remain those that were said over Zichronos and Shofaros, as we will see in the next mishnah.
In summary: in this mishnah we listed the six berachos that were added on the last seven fasts - Zichronos, Shofaros, "El Hashem batzarasah li," "Esa einai el heharim," "Mimaamakim" and "Tefillah l'ani ki yaatof" - and the approach of Rabbi Yehudah, who replaces the verses of Zichronos and Shofaros with the passages of "Ra'av ki yihyeh" and "Devar Hashem el Yirmiyahu al divrei habatzaros," while the concluding berachos remain in place.
In the next mishnah we will deal with the conclusions of these berachos: what the closing berachah of each and every one of them is.
