Shekalim Chapter 5, Mishnah 6: The Two Chambers in the Beis HaMikdash

Mishnah 6 in chapter 5 of Maseches Shekalim deals with two chambers that were in the Beis HaMikdash - two special rooms, each of which served a different purpose:

"Lishkas Chasha'im" - the Chamber of Secrets; 'chasha'im' comes from the word for secrecy and quiet.
"Lishkas HaKeilim" - the Chamber of Vessels, the chamber designated for vessels.

The Chamber of Secrets:

"Yirei chet nosnin l'sochah b'chashai, va'aniyim bnei tovim misparnesin mitochah b'chashai" - those who feared sin would place their money inside it discreetly, and poor people who came from well-to-do families and had lost their wealth would be supported from it in secret, receiving their livelihood from that money. For those poor people the situation was especially embarrassing, since they had once been wealthy, and in this way they were able to receive their support privately and quietly.

The Chamber of Vessels:

"Kol mi shehu misnadev kli zorko l'sochah" - anyone who wished to donate a vessel to the Beis HaMikdash would cast it into this chamber. Once every thirty days the treasurers of the Beis HaMikdash would open it and deal with the vessels as follows:

"V'chol kli shematz'u bo tzorech l'vedek habayis - manichin oso" - a vessel that could be used for the needs of the upkeep of the Beis HaMikdash and its general maintenance would remain in place and be put to that use.
"V'hash'ar nimkarin b'dmeihen v'noflin l'lishkas bedek habayis" - vessels for which no need was found were sold for their value, and the proceeds would go into the chamber from which the general fund for the upkeep of the Beis HaMikdash was managed.

In summary: in this Mishnah we learned about two chambers in the Beis HaMikdash - the Chamber of Secrets, into which those who feared sin would place their money discreetly and from which poor people of good family were supported in secret, and the Chamber of Vessels, into which vessels donated to the Beis HaMikdash were cast, where once every thirty days the treasurers would sort between vessels suitable for the upkeep of the Beis HaMikdash and vessels that were sold with their proceeds going into the general fund.

שְׁתֵּי לְשָׁכוֹת הָיוּ בַּמִּקְדָּשׁ, אַחַת לִשְׁכַּת חֲשָׁאִים, וְאַחַת לִשְׁכַּת הַכֵּלִים, לִשְׁכַּת חֲשָׁאִים יִרְאֵי חֵטְא נוֹתְנִים לְתוֹכָה בַּחֲשַׁאי, וַעֲנִיִּים בְּנֵי טוֹבִים מִתְפַּרְנְסִים מִתוֹכָהּ בַּחֲשַׁאי. לִשְׁכַּת הַכֵּלִים, כָּל מִי שֶׁהוּא מִתְנַדֵּב כֶּלִי, זוֹרְקוֹ לְתוֹכָהּ. וְאַחַת לִשְׁלשִׁים יוֹם, גִּזְבָּרִין פּוֹתְחִין אוֹתָהּ. וְכָל כְּלִי שֶׁמּוֹצְאִין בּוֹ צֹרֶךְ לְבֶדֶק הַבַּיִת, מַנִּיחִין אוֹתוֹ. וְהַשְּׁאָר נִמְכָּרִין בִּדְמֵיהֶן וְנוֹפְלִין לְלִשְׁכַּת בֶּדֶק הַבַּיִת: There were two special chambers in the Temple, one called the chamber of secret gifts and the other one called the chamber of vessels. The mishna explains the purpose of these chambers. In the chamber of secret gifts, sin-fearing people put money secretly and poor people of noble descent support themselves from it secretly. With regard to the chamber of vessels, anyone who donates a vessel to the Temple drops it inside that chamber, and once every thirty days the treasurers open it. And any vessel that they found for it a use for Temple maintenance, they leave it for that purpose, and the rest are sold, and their monetary value is allocated to Temple maintenance.
