Nedarim, Chapter 11, Mishnah 11. This mishnah presents two more examples of situations in which the husband may annul the vow, because they are considered matters between him and her - an issue that concerns the two of them as a couple. This annulment takes effect at least as far as he is concerned, even if the vow remains in force with regard to someone else.

The two cases in the mishnah:

  • "Konam she'eini nehenis le'abba ule'avich im osah ani al pich" - the wife vows that she will derive no benefit from her father and from her father-in-law if she does something for her husband. Even though she has not yet done anything for him, so that they are not yet forbidden to her, the husband may annul the vow already at this stage, before it has taken effect.

  • "She'eini nehenis lach im osah ani al pi abba ve'al pi avich" - the wife vows that she will derive no benefit from her husband if she does something for her father or for her father-in-law. This vow too is considered a matter between him and her, since a situation is created in which she cannot do anything for her father or for his father, out of concern that the vow will take effect and she will be forbidden to benefit from her husband.

In both cases the mishnah rules: "Harei zeh yafer" - the husband may annul, because these are matters between him and her, issues that concern the two of them.

In summary: in this mishnah we learned two additional examples of vows defined as matters between him and her: a vow not to benefit from her father and her father-in-law if she does something for her husband, and a vow not to benefit from her husband if she does something for her father or her father-in-law. In both cases the husband may annul, even before the vow has actually taken effect.
