Kiddushin, Chapter 1, Mishnah 8. In the previous mishnah we dealt with the differences between men and women regarding the obligation in mitzvos, and our mishnah continues to discuss mitzvah acts in which men and women are treated differently. This time the mishnah deals in particular with the services performed in the Beis HaMikdash, most of which are performed by a male kohen alone.
The acts listed by the mishnah:
"HaSemichos" - in this case the matter does not apply specifically to a kohen. Semichah is the placing of the hands, more precisely the pressing of the hands, on the head of the offering before it is slaughtered. This act is performed by men and not by women.
"VeHaTenufos" - the waving of the offering. In this act there is an exception, since there are cases in which a woman does the waving, as in the case of the sotah, as will be explained below.
"VeHaKemitzos" - this is already a service performed by a kohen alone: taking the handful from the minchah offering, the portion that is destined to be burned on the altar.
"VeHaHaktaros" - the burning of the portions of the offerings: the emurim, the fats and the limbs, as well as the handful of the minchah that is burned on the altar. All the acts of burning are performed by males alone.
"VeHaMelikos" - melikah is the act performed with a bird offering, in which the kohen uses the nail of his thumb to cut the simanim from the back of the bird's neck.
"VeHaZerikos" - the sprinkling of the blood on the altar.
"VeHaKabbalos" - receiving the blood as it comes out of the animal's neck. This too is performed by a male kohen alone.
Concerning all of these the mishnah rules: "Nohagin ba'anashim velo banashim" - these acts are performed by men and not by women.
"Chutz mi'minchas sotah u'nezirah shehen menifos":
There is one exception: the minchah of the sotah and the minchah of the nezirah. In both of these the woman herself performs one act - the waving. The waving is not entrusted specifically to a kohen, but is performed by an ordinary Israelite as well, and therefore a woman too is commanded in it.
In summary: our mishnah listed the services of the Beis HaMikdash that apply to men and not to women - semichah, tenufah, kemitzah, haktarah, melikah, zerikah and kabbalah, most of which are entrusted to a male kohen alone. The exception is the waving of the minchah of the sotah and the minchah of the nezirah, which the woman herself performs, because the waving is not entrusted specifically to a kohen.
