"Cheder" three hundred sixty-five in the palace of Hayom Yom.
Shabbos, 29 Cheshvan 5704. This Shabbos is the last Shabbos Mevorchim of the year, before the year in "Hayom Yom" concludes on 19 Kislev. The Rebbe notes immediately above, "Blessing Rosh Chodesh Kislev", along with what the Rebbe notes in the calendar for each of the Shabbos Mevorchim: "Recital of the entire Tehillim early in the morning. A day of farbrengen".
Shiurim: Chumash, Toldos, shevii with the commentary of Rashi.
Tehillim, the 29th of the month, one says from chapter 140 through chapter 150; since this month has no 30th day, on the 29th one says both portions - that of the 29th and that of the 30th - and thereby completes the entire Tehillim.
Tanya, on this day we continue in Kuntres Acharon, to finish the third section. The daily shiur is on page 308, from the words "mah shekasuv b'parshas Pekudei", until the end of the section on page 155, which concludes with the word "ha'Atzilus".
The daily teaching is from a letter that the Rebbe Rayatz wrote on this date, 29 Cheshvan, some years earlier, in the year 5699. In the letter the Rebbe Rayatz responds to a Jew who had asked him a question: in the community where he prays they said Tehillim every day - already beforehand, and not in connection with the Rebbe's takanah of saying Tehillim - they would say Tehillim publicly every day. And a request arose among some of the congregants, that perhaps instead of saying Tehillim they should use the time and study Midrash together. And this was his question: is it proper to cancel the Tehillim and study Midrash?
The Rebbe Rayatz writes to him that they may under no circumstances do this, and tells him that the great merit of saying Tehillim publicly is well known. And he adds: "I will convey to you something to tell the congregation". And what is that thing to tell the congregation? This is the daily teaching: "The holy avodah of saying Tehillim publicly - the greatness of the merit of those who participate in it cannot be sufficiently expressed, nor the great nachas ruach it brings Above, as is explained in the holy seforim". There are no words that can describe the merit of one who participates in saying Tehillim publicly, and how much nachas ruach the Holy One, blessed be He, has from it.
The Rebbe refers here to a specific place: "and a mere fraction of it" - a little of the matter - can be found "in the kuntres on the takanah of saying Tehillim publicly", printed in "Kovetz Michtavim I". Today this is found before us at the end of every Tehillim "Ohel Yosef Yitzchak", at whose end is a collection of letters of the Rebbe Rayatz, in which several points from his letters about the great virtue of saying Tehillim are gathered.
And he concludes: "Fortunate are you, Israel, and because of this may you be blessed, you, your wives, your sons and your daughters, may Hashem grant them life, with proper health and with abundant livelihood in great expansiveness, and through you may the entire congregation of Israel in your pure camp, may they live, within the community of all our brethren the Children of Israel, be helped in all that they need materially and spiritually". "Through you", meaning in your merit - when you say Tehillim, the blessing comes to you directly, but in your merit the entire congregation of Israel will be blessed. That is, the flow of abundance to those who say Tehillim will be drawn down also to all of the Jewish people, and especially to the entire congregation of Israel found in your pure camp - the whole community around you, and within the community of all our brethren the Children of Israel - in everything they need materially and spiritually; everything a Jew needs, materially and spiritually, is drawn down through saying Tehillim.
At the end of the letter the Rebbe Rayatz gives them several solutions and ideas as to when to set the public Midrash shiur, but again emphasizes that there should be no weakening because of it in saying Tehillim publicly - saying Tehillim publicly is something for which nothing is set aside.
